Yamato Tegai school was one of swordsmiths group who lived in front of Tegai-mon gate of Tôdai-ji temple. It was considered that they worked for Tô-daiji temple. Tegai-mon represents Kagekiyo-mon of Tô-daiji temple. It locates west of Shô-sô-in or Son-syô-in. The houses of hachi-cho square (79.200m2) were called "手貝"(Tegai). There are different character but same pronunciation, such as 輾磑 or 手掻 on the books "坊目考"(Bô-moku-kô) or "東鑑"(Azuma-kagami). There are also phonetic equivalents, such as "天蓋" or "転害".
Tegai school flourished most in Yamato styles. There are many remaining accordingly.
The school had characteristic using character "包"(kane) in their signature. Their ancestor "包永"(Kanenaga) worked during "貞応" or "正応". Kanenaga continued several generations. The swords which had signature of them started from "延文" or "貞応" of Nan-boku-chô period. There seemed that older swords observed many but not back to the middle of Kamakura period. (e.g. 『日本刀全集』第三巻 "Complete works of Japanese swords" vol. 3)
The school continued till end of Muromachi period.
