It was said that Shimosaka Sadatsugu had several generations, including first generation who worked actively around Kan-ei, receiving Hyû-ga-daijô and Hyû-ga-no-kami and second generation who worked around Kanbun. They lived at current Toyohara, Maruoka town, Sakai county, Fukui prefecture. He was known as expert swordsmith of Shimosaka school, as same as Yasutsugu family, who was hired by Tokugawa shogunate, moved from Ô-mi to Echizen.

He was considered as one of influential staff of first generation Yasutsugu since
1) Soe-mei (accompanied signature), as same as first generation Yasutsugu, "重胴及度々末世劔是也"(Kasane-dô oyobi tabitabi, masse (no) ken kore nari).
2) First generation Yasutsugu's signature "Shimosaka", its appearance is similar to that of first generation Sadatsugu.

Sadatsugu created the sword with "立葵"(tachi-aoi) whose family crest of HONDA Hida-no-kami Narushige, the chief retainer to Echizen family. First generation Yasutsugu created the swords with same family crest and the signature owned by Narushige. Those facts led to the comment "it was considered that both of them were favorite swordsmiths of Narushige" on the book "寒山刀剣講座 第四巻 諸国鍛冶(二)篇" (Dr. Kanzan's swords course vol. 4, on swordsmith of several provinces 2).

Narushige HONDA was the lord of a castle Echizen Maruoka, 43 thousands rice kokus. His father was Sakuzaemon HONDA, so called Oni-saku-za, no comparable great swordsman.

First generation's signature and time stamps : "越前国下坂貞次", "於越前豊原下坂日向大掾貞次", "越前国日向大掾下坂貞次", "越前於豊原日向大掾藤原貞次作是" and "日向守貞次", etc. Kan-ei 5, 8, etc.
Second generation's signature and time stamps : "越前国下坂貞次", "越前住日向守藤原貞次", "日向守貞次", "越前豊原住日向守藤原貞次以地鉄研合伏鍛之", etc. Kanbun 10, etc.
