[ Highlight ] There are very few surviving Kotetsu short swords or hira-zukuri wakizashi, and this one is probably a forgery, judging from its inscription. However, it is housed in a highly attractive arrangement, which shows how this short sword was handled. The scrolled handle with its beautifully preserved serpentine threads, and the chrysanthemum seat around the megugi hole are fine and gorgeous, and the fuchigashira, sword mount, sheath opening, kawara and uchi, which are all made of tsuno, polished with lustrous black lacquer, are well shaped and the sheath is carefully finished in a dark brown ishime lacquer that seems to emit fine light. The kozuka is made of Shaku-do nanako-ji with a whorl pattern of inome sukashi on an iron ground, and is unusual in that it depicts a cow and a fox as household members (messengers of the gods).
