Wakizashi, Shirasaya
1st generation Hizen Tadayoshi

[ Signature ]
( Omote ): Hizen-no-Kuni ju-nin Tadayoshi saku
( Ura ): Dou koku ju-nin saku-so Munenaga
[ Size ]: Blade length: 46,0cm (1 shaku 4 sun 6 bu 5 rin), sori: 0.7cm (3 bu 8 rin), moto-Haba: 3.09 cm, moto kasane: 0.58 cm, mekugi-ana (hole): 1, the weight of the blade: 469 g, shirasaya length: 64.5cm
[ Period ]: In early Edo
[ Province ]: Hizen

[ Features ]:
Form: Unokubi-zukuri, iori-mune. The downward of mune is in very inclined. Mihaba is ordinal.
Extended length comparing mihaba. A little deep sori attached .
Nakago: Ubu. Yasurimes are Katte-sagari with a little inclined. Saki is kuri-jiri. A hole.
Hori-mono: There is ranma-sukashi of kuri-kara with shin style, around Koshimoto-shinogi-ji in hitsu.
Jigane: Ko-Itame-hada, fine grain, mixed ko-mokume. A plenty of jinie attached in rich. Chi-Kei appeared well and fine. There is shirake-Gokoro part by part, next to shinogi. Below machi, the phenomenon like mizukage observed.

Hamon: In tone of sugu. A little notare. Koashi appeared. Konie attached and strong nie from part by part as well. Kui-chigai and ni-ju-ba mixed. Nioikuchi is bright.
Boushi: Notare a bit, it turns like o-maru. Saki is hakikake.

First generation Tadayoshi was swordsmith in Hizen province, where Nabeshima clan ruled.
He called himself Shinzaemon HASHIMOTO.

In Keicho 1 (1597), he went to Kyoto with Munenaga, horimono-shi (sculpture artisan) in the same school by order of the clan.
They entered the school of Umetada Minju. Tadayoshi studied creating swords, Munenaga sculpture.

In same the year, they returned Saga. With the help of clan, they flourished assembled their school.

In Genna 10 (1624), he went to Kyoto again. He had received Musashi Daijo and name of Fujiwara.
He had changed his signature to Tadahiro. At the same time, he gave his name Tadayoshi in Tosa-no-kami adopted son. He died in Kanei 9 (1632), 61 years old.

The signatures are roughly classified into three patterns :
1) Five characters as 肥 前 国忠 吉, it is called "go ji Tadayoshi"
2) Eight characters as 肥 前 国 住 人 忠 吉 作, it is called that "Jyu-nin Tadasyohi" since there are the characters 住 人.
3) After receive of Musashi Daijo, he made his signature "Musashi Daijo Tadahiro"

The sword has the signature "Jyu-nin Tadayoshi", the signature which was the oldest in Keicho 18 (1613), continuing around Genna (1615-1624)

(Omote): Hizen-no-kuni ju-nin Tadayoshi saku do-koku ju-nin saku-so Mune-naga zai-mei nagasa i-shaku yon-sun roku-bu-han kore ari.
(Ura): Tadayoshi-ko- shosai so-cho-ka

[ Highlight ]:
It is old and nice jiba as if it seems to be "utsushi" of old Kamakura period masterpieces of Yamato.
It is u-no-kubi-zukuri wakizashi, seems to be created around Keicho 18-19 (1613-1614).
The horimone (engraving) with clear dynamic lines and beautiful nikuoki by Munenaga and the sword with remarkable jigane make harmony.
First generation Hizen Tadayoshi is sai-jo o-wazamono.

[ Conditions ]:
Excellent. It has some wearing points of Hi(肥) and zen(前) characters in omo-te but in Ju-yo Touken zuhu (very important swords diagram) is evaluating as "upper body work is significant more than made up for the wearing"

[ Attachments ]: Double copper of gold foiled habaki, shirasya, shirasaya bag and 45th-NBTHK Juyo Touken certificate.
