Swordsmith first generation KOBAYSHI Yasuhiro was born at Toyotomi village, Higashi yatsushiro county, Yamanashi pref. in 1914.

Aside from running the refrigerator dealing company, he was familiar with Chinese classic literatures, swords lover and collector as well.
He asked creating the swords several times for AKIMOTO Akitomo. During the planning, proposal and material procurement, he actuall started to study creating the swords from Showa 40(1965).

Then he dissolved a company, entered sword making at Takanawa, Tokyo. He aimed to reproduction the beauties of Yamashiro-den and Yamato-den, which he had loved. He concentrated to make and study Koto.

He practiced old steel manufacturing traces. As a result, he discovered and had the confidence on the way of iron making of Koto, using natural wind blow from downward to upward of the slope of mountain. He established his own workshop at south base of Yatsugatake (Nagasaka, Yamanashi pref.), started experimental steel creation.

Not by a process of folding and forging using open furnace with lever iron (tekogane) but by forging block of iron picking by pincers, folding, heating using closed furnace. This method required a lot of charcoal and labor. His way of creating the sword was not cover the shingane(core iron) by kawanage(covering steel)but muku-gitae(pure steel forging). He cleaved to this method to the end.

Aside from ordinal way of current sword creating, such as using Tatara irons, ventilation, forging using "tekogane", he considered it more simple, the way of creating and forging in Koto era.

However, he made the swords using Tamahagane. It seems that he tried to use several kinds of materials to seek the possibility and potentials of them.

Not only the beauty of swords but he also regard the cutting taste, strongness and handling as important. His royalty to his belief, creation method of swords, called much attentions of sword lovers from his lifetime. The twenty years was not long for sword creation period but high intense of energy was poured so that the swords with high spirits density remained.

He died on 20th May Showa 62(1987). The study on Koto and its creation method have been carried to his successors, second generation KOBAYASHI Yasuhiro and his school, continuing and deepening.

This tanto sword was made in Showa 54(1979), in his 62 years old. The sword is considered as the compilation of the study and work of Takanawa period since it past five years from getting the sword making approval on 1st October Showa 49(1974). Then the sword was delivered to the client. Nest year, he moved the workshop to Yamanashi pref.

The width of nakago-saki does not become so narrow, the sori attached in the middle of nakago.
